The Textalyzer Test – A Good Idea?

New York Contemplating New Legislation

In an effort to crack down on texting and driving, New York lawmakers are considering equipping police officers with Textalyzer technology. Just as a Breathalyzer is used to determine if a driver has alcohol in his system, a Textalyzer can be used to determine if a driver has been using his phone to text or email while driving. An officer who pulls over a driver and inspects if that driver has been using his cell phone to text or email. The officer would use the Textalyzer device to determine if the driver has been using his phone while driving.

Critics of the Textalyzer cite privacy concerns, although the device would not allow police to see the contents of texts or emails. Textalyzer advocates, including Candace Lightner, founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, point to statistics confirming increases in the number of distracted driving related accidents. Lightner and others argue that the technology could save lives by making drivers think twice about using their phones will driving. If New York lawmakers decide to equip police with Textalyzers, lawmakers across the country may carefully consider adopting Textalyzer use.
