Crowd Control: Holiday Safety Tips for Retailers

As holiday season is in full-swing, Black Friday is rapidly approaching. As this day is infamous for swarming crowds flocking to retailers, it is important to prepare your store for the eminent foot traffic. However, in order to protect your employees and store from injury and damage, equip yourself with Indianapolis Retailers Insurance.

In order to plan for the holidays, your store should be adequately staffed to accommodate the crowds. Security personnel or those trained in crowd management should be on site. Further, legible and easily visible signs should be placed throughout the store to indicate exits and a designated employee should be nominated to contact authorities in the event of an emergency.

Ropes and barricades should be set up to direct lines for entering the building, paying, and dressing rooms. Equip outside employees with radios in order to communicate traffic, as well. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reminds you to ensure that barricade lines have an adequate number of breaks and turns at regular intervals to reduce the risk of customers pushing from the rear and injuring patrons and employees. Experts also recommend placing sale items throughout the store to prevent crowds from swarming to one location.

During the event, provide a separate entrance for employees that are guarded by a security staff member to prevent customers from attempting to enter. Use more than one entrance and exit for crowds, if possible. Once the store reaches maximum capacity, do not permit more people from entering until some of the crowd has cleared out. Next, people with disabilities should be accommodated with ramps and railings.

It is important to have a plan for emergency medical response if needed. It is also advised to have someone who is trained on CPR and AED, as well as having a first-aid kid on hand.
